Consuming vs Doing

by Alissa

Are you consuming God’s word? Do you take it in, soak it up and let it sit there? You might attend church on Sundays. Go to Sunday school, but other than Sunday your life may not affect what you are consuming. God intended us to be doers of His word. To soak it up, learn, study, and spread it all over. Access to God’s word has changed so much in the last few decades. All over the world people can read God’s word online, in podcasts, attend church, and many people have multiple copies of the Bible in their home. Yet even though the access to God’s word has increased, Christianity is declining each year. People are choosing sin verse a life that glorifies God. Let’s be real Satin is getting sneakier and slyer. He is good and blending in and slowly he can creep in our life. It says in Ephesians  5:215-16,  “Be careful, then how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil.”  We need to take in God’s work and use what we know to be doers. Let the gospel over flow into our homes, our neighborhoods, and workplaces. Each day is a gift. God’s word is a gift. Let’s make each day purposeful and useful to glorify God. What on earth does this have to do with composting? HA! Well, we need to take in God’s word and use it purposefully. God has given us all these tools at our finger tips and there is no excuse for us not to grow in our relationship with Him. We take what He gives us and uses our life to purposefully.

Randy and I should have started composting when we first had a garden. But now that we have donkeys, sheep, and a easy solution in our kitchen it makes it really easy. Our sons have so many jobs on our farm. We don’t pay them for the jobs, but just expect them to do it. They actually love it. It gives them some ownership and they like to show the other siblings what their job entails. Our son Titus has the job of cleaning up Donkey manure. Ha! This kid loves it. I mean what six-year-old doesn’t like playing with rakes and scoops? He loves going around the property, petting the donkeys and picking it up as he goes! We have two large trash cans right now. One for the donkey manure. It needs to be aged for 6 months before you put in on the garden. The other bin in for our vegetables and fruits we discard or cut up scraps. We do give some things to the chickens. Although, giving them too many of the scraps changes the flavor of the eggs.

I keep a small bowl on my window in the kitchen for scraps for the chickens. I am blessed to have a cutting board with a hold built in our kitchen. Below the hole there is a garbage bin. All the scraps from cutting and also eggshells go in this bin. It is so easy because then my oldest son dumps the bin into the large trash can by our garden.  We are in the process of making the compost with grass trimmings and letting it sit for some time before it goes on the garden.
